Working as a chef in Norway

What a chef should know before taking a job in Norway or Nordic Lapland — written by Ari Lepisto, who worked in an Arctic resort kitchen in Lofoten. The full guide, Salt, Cod and the Midnight Sun, is a free download.

What the guide covers

  • The paperwork, step by step, for Nordic, EU/EEA and non-EU citizens
  • Real pay under the tariff agreement: overtime, holiday pay and staff housing
  • Lofoten seasons and Norwegian kitchen culture

02

Seasonal hospitality jobs in Scandinavia

Hotels and resorts in Norway, Nordic Lapland and the Swedish mountains hire seasonal chefs and service staff for their peak periods. A season is intense and often far from home, so know your contract, your hours and your housing before you accept.

03

Red flags before you travel

  • Anyone asking you to pay a recruitment fee
  • Anyone asking to keep your passport
  • A different contract when you arrive, or vague terms
  • Being asked to travel on a tourist visa to work

04

Candidates never pay

Through NORDIC BRIGADE you never pay a recruitment fee: the employer pays. You get a written contract before you travel, in a language you understand, and your passport stays with you.
